This move has taken me to a place I haven't been in a long time: feeling alone. We knew when we left Rexburg we'd be leaving all our friends behind and would have to start fresh, but during Seve's student teaching we had all those other student teachers to hang out with, and Portland was abundant with family.
In our new home I only see Seve early in the morning and late at night, since he stays late for all that drama he's teaching. His first play as a new teacher: Wit. He's worried about the pelvic exam scene. He and the town's other high school drama teacher are also considering a collaboration on a joint musical, Urinetown.
So Simon and I are left to our own devices all day long. This is what I thought I was waiting for, this is what I thought I wanted for years. To simply be home with my baby, but goodness, I find it very lonely. Simon is wonderful, but his conversation capacities are limited at the moment.
To keep my spirits up, I've created a writing nook where this apartment's fireplace used to be. I bought a cork board where I post all of my ideas and visual inspiration so I can keep myself grounded in my writing and not drift into depression. My desk fits perfectly into the nook and I write for about 2-3 hours each day during Simon's naps.
But sometimes it's not enough. I need some girlfriends, stat. And if I could choose, I'd like some weirdos like me. Who like the dark and the feminine, who are excited for Bat For Lashes' new album The Haunted Man, who will start a book club and read something other than Tuesdays with Morrie. It'd be nice if they had babies, too. But who am I to be picky?
Remember when Tiana Godfrey took dreamy photos of Seve and myself? In particular, the jumping shot from this post? Well, Everclear wants to use that photo for the cover of their upcoming album (out in June, I think?) Tiana wrote me asking if this would be all right, to which I replied OF COURSE ARE YOU KIDDING YES.
As Tiana put it, "Your feet will be famous amongst the late 90's pop music fans out there." I'd like to add "post-grunge" in there for good measure, but either way, it sounds good to me.
Have any of you heard of Alex Boyé? Or seen this Coldplay cover circulating Facebook? Well, Seve and I went to his concert this weekend thanks to a family/theatre connection that got us some free tickets. To be honest, I didn't research him before going - I was under the impression we were in for a jazz night or something. It wasn't jazz, but man oh man did we have an amazing time! Like, a black-hipster-MoTab-member-Ray-Charles-impersonating-jokester good time.
For one of his numbers he asked members of the audience for a hat, noting he was looking for something a little more interesting than a baseball cap. We just so happened to don Simon out in his new hat that night . . .
This hat, in fact:
And Mr. Boyé savored in its ridiculousness, saying, "Are you kidding? I look like Urkel!" And, you know, used it anyway:
Later that night, Simon got to meet Alex (and get his hat back):
During singlehood, one of the first questions I'd ask a new roommate was "So what kind of music do you like?" to which I almost always received the reply, "Oh, I like everything." Which was usually true, and that's fine, and the mark of a open mind, but little did they know about the picky bi#ch they'd just moved in with. I'm so picky I don't even prescribe to a specific genre of music, but rather ten or so artists who I listen to all the time. Actually, not "ten or so," but specifically The Ten. Because, you know, the picky pound-sign-female-dog thing. And on that rare occasion when I find a new artist, The Ten does not become The Eleven. The new artist replaces an old one and I don't even bother to sugarcoat the blow as I remove them from my rotation.
It's not that I only allow ten artists to exist in my life, it's just that old tastes naturally fall away as I get older and wiser and realize the Smashing Pumpkins were only great when I was in high school. I look back on them fondly and might play a tune here or there the same way I'll glance at the photo of an ex-boyfriend. But just as with an old flame, I'm not about to call them up again and rekindle the relationship.
I'm not going to list The Ten, but rather inform you that a ten-or-less mindset dominates all my tastes. Fashion, film, literature, etc. This particular post will center on footwear, which I can never get my pickiness to raise any higher than The Six. So, meet pair #6, the beauties that managed to snag my interest, penetrate my pocketbook, and, of course, replace a previous contender this week. So long, black wedges! Hello, navy & white striped espadrilles!
And Happy Friday the 13th! Let's watch The Shining and play some Smashing Pumpkins.
-the woman who muttered "Quack!" under her breath as she angrily stormed out of Simon's doctor's office just before we were called in
-the "Best Breakfast Spot in Portland" 8 years in a row or something only accepting checks - though their pigs in a blanket were to die for, so I just asked "how much?" and signed away
-the snow! So much snow! It's March, Oregon, March! And Spring Break, for crying out loud!
-the conversations of truckers picked up by Simon's baby monitor (not to mention all the supposed aliens and ghosts we hear through that thing)
-the fact that I missed the opportunity to attend the midnight showing of Hunger Games . . . lame, Jules, lame
-the old woman I recognized at my library's "How to Download Library eBooks" mini-class and the lecture she gave me on how her granddaughter "threw her life down the drain after that trip to Russia"
-the weirdo emails I get in my old "ohnojules" Gmail account linked to my old blog . . . spammers asking if they can sponsor me (for a fee) or if I'll sponsor them (also for a fee)
I remember the last time I held you in my arms, the last time I played you. Though your new strings felt wonderful, it was a sad reminder that I was, in fact, selling you - thus the reason for the new strings at all. Because it had been 3 years since I last gave you any serious attention, 3 years since I attempted the tricky art of strumming and singing at the same time, 3 years since I'd bothered to learn the chords to a Sleater-Kinney or Led Zeppelin song. I knew that our relationship had turned into a cold, cruel one where I lugged you from one closet to another, leaving you dark and unloved in your velvet-lined case.
We have a lot of history together, you and I. From ex-boyfriends to college degrees, you were there for so much. But we both knew that you longed to be played, long to be loved. That brief semester with my brother-in-law gave you the taste you needed of the stage, of blood on your pickups and a song in your heart. Your beautiful, cherry wood heart. You told me you had had enough - you finally knew what you were missing out on, and it was something I could never give to you. I obliged when you finally asked to be let go.
Besides, I wanted a new camera.
May your new owner snap those new strings, wear down your polish, and, of course, get blood on your pickups.
When I first heard this Animal Collective cover, I thought it was cute, but wasn't eager to download it. But now that life is a happy mix of just me and "my boys," I love to sing it to Simon as a lullaby. The cover is by Taken by Trees, the solo project of Victoria Bergsman (that girl who sang about not caring about the young folks with Peter Bjorn and John).
I know that for some, Animal Collective is that band with the freaky alien music video, but their latest album had a lot of beautiful lyrics, including this song about putting aside materialism, providing for your loved ones, and realizing what really matters in life and what you really need.
There isn't much that I feel I need A solid soul and the blood I bleed With a little Guy, and by my spouse I only want a proper house
I don't care for fancy things Or to take part in the freshest wave But to provide for mine who ask I will, with heart, on my father's grave
I don't mean to seem like I care about material things Like a social status I just want four walls and adobe slats for my boys
Now that we have a proper and sturdy internet connection, I could update you on life as a 8-month pregnant women and how she decorates her new apartment, takes over an hour to install a car seat, and enjoys a new drawing class, but for the time being I'll just post the latest music video from my girl crush. Strange Mercy out Sept 13! And hopefully my baby will be out Oct 2.
Well, I've decided to start a blog with a new name. Not sure when I'll go public with it, the time will come.
I'm pregnant! 16 weeks along, and I love it. I don't love the nausea, vomiting, headaches, backaches, leg aches, heart aches, etc. . . . but I am SO HAPPY to be having a little Seve & Jules baby.
This experience has been very strange. I missed about three months of work. My first trimester (actually, my first four months) were like living in another dimension. I was so sick that I simply stayed home all the time, and luckily my job let me work from home so I could still bring in some paychecks and make rent. But I was cooped up in my room all the time, and Seve was always gone for school and theatre stuff . . . I was alone all the time and grew pretty miserable. It was easy to forget that I was pregnant and just feel like I was dying.
Well, now that I'm feeling better (less vomiting, able to get up and walk around and have conversations with people) I feel much happier, and like I'm finally able to enjoy the experience of being pregnant. Back when I first got the positive pregnancy test, I was under the impression my pregnancy would be "fabulous;" full of shopping for hip maternity wear, eating healthy organic meals, taking pregnancy yoga classes . . . yeah. I'm lucky if I can get down the stairs, much less out of bed.
Anyway, when I gave up, er, living, I also gave up blogging. I didn't mean to, it was just another byproduct of feeling so sick all the time. Being on my laptop made me dizzy, so I only dedicated laptop-time to working and nothing else. In fact, I'm dizzy right now after writing this much, so, er . . . I'm out.
BUT FIRST. A picture of my latest favorite music maker.
I know what you're thinking. JULES ITZ TOTES NOT SUMMER WTF WITH THE BEACH PICTURE OMG.
Ever since it was made official that Seve and I will be going to Florida for Christmas, it's all I can think about. Rexburg's snowy winter slush is nothing compared to my white sand euphoria. In anticipation for the trip, I've been enjoying surfy beachy trippy music rather than Christmas tunes. The Drums, Heavy Hawaii, and the Cults dominate my playlist. Don't worry, I won't pretentiously name drop and leave you empty handed. Dream with me now:
I thoroughly enjoy the Fall and its wardrobe. Cold enough for a sweater, but warm enough to still bare some skin. Too bad I live in Rexburg and this season is mere days away from being over. I hate ice and snow.
OMG what's this? Is it the Shins? Click: How nice. Takes ya back, doesn't it?
Finally got around to posting this! About a month ago, Seve and I saw Joshua James. This shouldn't seem like such an amazing feat, but it really is. We've been trying to go to a Joshua James show together before we even started dating.
The first time, Seve and I had only just moved on from making eyes at each other in class to openly flirting and getting to know each other. I thought he was cute and invited him to attend the show with me. He said yes, but then ended up having to deal with an unpleasant ex-girlfriend situation. Another time, I was avoiding an ex-boyfriend who I was sure would be at the show, and declined Seve's invitation to avoid an awkward encounter. I regret not being brave and just going with that cute Seve fella. After that, Seve and I missed out on Mr. James several times by simply being out of state (Texas, Missouri, Russia ... yeah) but here we are, a couple years later, and we finally got to see this artist we love so much - he's one of "our" artists, so it was about time.
For you, Seve. I know I can be selfish sometimes, and grumpy and scared and silly and lame. Thanks for loving me anyway. I happen to love you just as much. I'm trying everyday to be the person for you that you are for me.
-Listening to Yeasayer's Odd Blood (everyone click here) -Reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Umbridge . . . Umbridge!) -Wearing my new coat (remember?) -Finding this song for Seve (HA! Middle school, right? Maybe elementary for you? Preschool? Am I old?) -Watched Who's That Girl? last night. So silly. -Loving Stina Persson, whose lovely art is responsible for my new header. Oh, and visit Panache if you haven't already for a cool giveaway! Need.
Fall is only the greatest season ever for fashion. This is our first fall to spend in Rexburg, and we're excited to experience an Idaho Autumn! We're hoping it's not a week-long phenomena that quickly transitions into snow. I love seeing the leaves change, love the rain and love the earthy smell. Mm hmm.
