Anyone's ghost

Had an awesome trip to Oregon a few weeks ago. Can't believe summer is already gone! Ah well, like any relevant blogger fall is my favorite season, so I'm not terribly bummed by summer's passing. But man, was it fast.

I'm quite sad because one of the good friends I made since moving here is moving away tomorrow. The news of which she only found out about two days ago. We were just to that point in our friendship where you share all your weirds with each other and bond over all the mutual weird. We were sharing books, our kids were pushing each other over, and she and her husband were about to move into our ward (or away for a job change . . . turns out they're going the job change route). We're having a pizza party tonight as our little fare-thee-well but all the pepperoni pizza in the world won't keep these sads at bay. Who am I gonna build ramps for now?

The Haunted Man

This move has taken me to a place I haven't been in a long time: feeling alone. We knew when we left Rexburg we'd be leaving all our friends behind and would have to start fresh, but during Seve's student teaching we had all those other student teachers to hang out with, and Portland was abundant with family.

In our new home I only see Seve early in the morning and late at night, since he stays late for all that drama he's teaching. His first play as a new teacher: Wit. He's worried about the pelvic exam scene. He and the town's other high school drama teacher are also considering a collaboration on a joint musical, Urinetown.

So Simon and I are left to our own devices all day long. This is what I thought I was waiting for, this is what I thought I wanted for years. To simply be home with my baby, but goodness, I find it very lonely. Simon is wonderful, but his conversation capacities are limited at the moment.

To keep my spirits up, I've created a writing nook where this apartment's fireplace used to be. I bought a cork board where I post all of my ideas and visual inspiration so I can keep myself grounded in my writing and not drift into depression. My desk fits perfectly into the nook and I write for about 2-3 hours each day during Simon's naps.

But sometimes it's not enough. I need some girlfriends, stat. And if I could choose, I'd like some weirdos like me. Who like the dark and the feminine, who are excited for Bat For Lashes' new album The Haunted Man, who will start a book club and read something other than Tuesdays with Morrie. It'd be nice if they had babies, too. But who am I to be picky?

Love of my life

So far he has job interviews for:

Memphis.

And.

A tiny town in Nevada with a population of 800. Supposedly Mark Twain was born there. Not "his mother labored and popped out a great noveliest" born there, but Samuel Langhorne Clemens failed as a minor here and decided to become MARK TWAIN, writer and humorist, born there.

We'll go where the job is, but  . . . well, I'm more of an Elvis fan than a Mark Twain fan. But it's rockabilly either way, right?

Name game

Last weekend we went to Portland's numero uno science museum, OMSI, or as Seve calls it, Exploration Station. That's what he calls any science museum he can't remember the name of. Any restaurant he can't remember the name of he'll refer to as Macaroni Palace. All grocery stores are called Uncle Leroy's. Girls are either Penelope or Petunia. But he seems to always be able to remember guy's names. That's just sexist, says me.

Seve will also insert "fart" or "boob" to any entertainment he doesn't like. Last of the Mohicans = Last of the Farthicans, Justin Beiber = Justin Boober. Kim Fartashian. Also, Jersey Snore. Haha.

Be Mine

Hope you all had a wonderful Valentine's Day! My sweatheart kicked off our celebration by snuggling up close when we woke up Valentine's morning, only to quickly turn away and suggest I brush my teeth before we smooched. Embarrassed, I moped over to the bathroom sink - where I found a heart-shaped box of chocolates waiting in my toothpaste drawer. Dirty rascal.

Suffice it to say, we ate half the box for breakfast.

S + J

The move to Boise has been busy busy busy, but I wanted to share a little secret with you.

When Seve and I were in Moscow, we went to visit the lock trees near Red Square. It's a tradition in Russia to leave a lock on a place of significance, with either your names inscribed on it or wedding vows or whatnot. The tradition isn't entirely romantic as some of the locks we saw had "BFF 4 EVAH" and "F U" kind of stuff written on them. The trees near Red Square get so loaded with locks that they're frequently chopped off (only to be refilled with hundreds more shortly thereafter) so it's not like your lock really lasts there forever - maybe a month? Nonetheless, Seve and I wanted to place a lock somewhere in Moscow. Sadly, we never got around to it.

My last week in Rexburg I was mourning the end of our time there, but in a happy way. Seve and I really grew to love that town. So my last night in our apartment I placed a lock on our balcony.

See the lock in the last photo?

I didn't have time to make our "inscription" extremely intricate. Everything we had was packed away for the move the next day, but I was able to dig out a permanent marker. The whole affair was like a closing ceremony to our time there. It was a little, silly thing, and I worry that the new tenants will likely discover it and have it chopped off (it's not exactly a tiny lock), but I like to hold my key and imagine our lock in Rexburg staying there forever.

Anytime will do, my love

I'm really proud of this guy. He recently graduated with his Bachelor's in Theatre/Speech Education and he's currently busy with the BYU-Idaho Theatre Summer Camp, of which he's the director/creator. I remember the morning he woke up telling me he had this amazing dream about organizing a theatre summer camp for high school kids up on campus. It's wonderful to see that dream come to fruition a year later.

Seve and I will be moving in just two weeks! Also, we're getting a new car. Also, I've been packing for the past four days while Seve's been busy with the camp. No matter how tiny our apartment is, or how little we seem to own, packing while 31 weeks pregnant has proven to be a slow, daunting task. It's pretty ridiculous. Like, carry-three-books-at-a-time-into-the-next-room-to-place-in-a-box ridiculous. Get three more books, repeat. Ugh. But I'll be finished in time for next week, which I plan on being packing-free so Seve and I can relive first dates/kisses/ice cream cones/etc one last time before we move.

Back to three-book packing!

I know that you'll recognize it's summertime

Summer is here, and Seve's birthday is this weekend.

Seve and I have been put into the awkward situation of having to choose our next tenants seeing as we're selling our contract 2 weeks before it ends. Neighbors and others have recently become aware this fact, and we've had several approach us asking for our unit (it's the largest one-bedroom in the building, the only one with a balcony, and "shabby chic" as it was the Presidential suite 100 years ago back when the building was a hotel). These conversations have ranged from friendly to awkward to downright rude. I'd expand, but who knows if any of them read the good ghost?

I'll just note that there have been cookies, offers to help us move, invites to hang out, bribes of money, and tears from someone I'd never met before. I've become wary of answering the knocks at my door.

Honestly, we'd just like to offer it to close friends who will love and enjoy it the way we have. Without all the crying.

This is for my mother(s)

6-month baby bump.

Play idea: "Oedipus Tex." Basically the Greek tragedy set in the Wild West. Oedipus would gouge his eyes out with his spurs or something. Inappropriate tagline: Oedipus Tex, the Original Mother F*cker.

Turns out I'm not the first one to come up with this. So, with that out of the way, go see Seve as the one and only Oedipus in Oedipus Rex at the Snow Drama Theatre, June 29 - July 2, 5-8. Yippee ki-yay.

We dig paisley

First of all, a big THANK YOU to everyone for your kind words and support!!!

Did you know I have 14 blog post drafts? It's common for me to start blog posts and never finish them.

It's been veeery quiet around here lately, and I can sum up the reason for that in two words: nausea + vomiting.

I'm so very excited to be pregnant, but man, I haven't felt like myself these past few weeks. I've been confined to my bedroom and working from home busy with those two words above. I've left this bedroom a mere once since getting sick (not just my apartment, but my bedroom). What's going on in the outside world? Without the internet I'd probably be crazy right now.

So, sorry for infrequent posting. My real life is a bit queasy at the moment. To make amends, here's our official "I peed on this and it said 'baby'" picture, back before my relationship with food hit the rocks:
Just a coupla' hipsters. That mustache reminds me: Doubt opens this week! Go see Seve as Father Flynn at the Black Box Theatre and have a grand ol' time. Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Photo Snappy Time

As was a goal in my resolution post, Seve and I got a new camera! The Canon Powershot SX210 IS (in gold, of course).

After some research, I decided I didn't really want a DSLR, but something compact that still packed some great manual features. I would have liked the Panasonic Lumix LX5, or, sweet heavens, a Leica, but considering I'm not actually a good/experienced photographer or, you know, made of money, the SX210 fit the bill.

Here's some sample shots:
Oh hai Jen!

Mah office books.

Obligatory artsy brick background picture.

Ditto.

These are all a bit aperture-nutso, but I'm still happy with our first experimental shots.

Behind your eyes, the holiday

Florida, oh, Florida.
We watched the first sun rise of the new year from the shores of Fort Lauderdale. We spent our anniversary in Key West, and carved our names in the Autograph Tree.

We ate alligator tail, and key lime everything. We spent Christmas and New Year's with Seve's family, we watched dolphins and sea lions perform tricks in Miami, we saw tiny blue jellyfish scattered along the shores of the east coast. We came, we saw, we shopped(!), we slept in. We were warm, we were well fed, we were happy.

But, most importantly, we were lazy.

It is so great to be lazy.

What what? A new layout? Already? Oh, Jules, you're so restless.

In the bat's mouth

I love this print by Francesca Montanari. I originally wanted to get it for myself as a personal pat on the back for finishing the NaNoWriMo (especially since I listened to a lot of Bat For Lashes during the process), but now I think it will just be a Christmas present "from Seve." He already knows what I got him, haha. A tight budget where we're both privy to who bought what, where, and when kind of kills the surprise of gift giving for us. But maybe I'll manage to sneak in a nice anniversary gift that'll knock his socks off. Hmm . . .

The Book Smart Wolf

Well gosh crap it's snowing.
My new office window!

So, I recently completed my goal of reading and viewing all Harry Potter literary and film installments. Thoughts after reading: I wish I was Harry Potter.

Writing the NaNo while finishing Harry Potter has given me a whole new perspective on world and character building, and the scope by which Mrs. Rowling managed to juggle so much in such a perfectly executed fashion. It boggles me that her mind was able to store so much, though I'm beginning to learn that with the power of Microsoft Excel anything is possible.

My own novel is struggling with elements of brooding darkness and quirkiness that don't seem to mix. I'm getting the word count down for sure; writing isn't the issue, it's feeling accomplished in what I've written. My wolves are wearing glasses and listening to '50s doo-wop music one minute then debating the handling of a severed head the next. They're dealing with a haunted canoe, falling in love, missing their moms, hunting down ghosts, discussing the merits of devouring the haunted canoe . . . I guess it's silly of me to expect anything real to come of this project. I went into it knowing it'd be just for kicks. But since when am I a werewolf novelist?

Also. Due to my husband's fervent dislike of the title On All Fours, here are some other titles for your consideration:

Red Riding (turns out this is the title to a TV series)
The Book Smart Wolf (serious consideration at this point)
Muzzle (boring)
Wolf Like Me (TV On the Radio song title)
Haters Gonna Hate Now Let's Go A'Howlin (made this one up on the spot while typing this post)

I worry that anything with "wolf" in the title will be tossed aside as another Blood & Chocolate or Twilight knockoff. Lord help me, if I ever attempt to publish this thing I'll need a good query letter to sever that connection, but when you're an agent with a daily slush pile to tackle, the wrong title can set a bad taste in the mouth that spoils the rest of the letter. Hmm.

Oh, and for the record, Harry Potter was a much better boyfriend than The Hunger Games. By far.

Sh*t my coworker says

So so busy. Work + NaNo have me writing writing writing. I shouldn't even be taking this blog break. I love this Barnaby Ward sketch as it's a good reflection of my mind right now. Just busy and cluttered. But I'm getting everything done! That's what counts. Seve's incredibly busy too. Read: TWO PLAYS AT THE SAME TIME. Plus school. Crazy.

Oh, and we're officially going to Florida for Christmas! Didn't think it would be possible, but my Mum and Bum-in-law have very generously secured the trip for us. Trying to think of how on earth I can ever repay them for their kindness.

Also, I was daydreaming about how funny it'd be to have a "fashion blog" dedicated to people in pajamas and sweatpants, but in really sexy poses and pretty photo shoot settings. They'd act like it's real fashion, and list where they got each item. Winnie the Pooh onesie - $15 - Walmart.

And OH YES Halloween was fantastic! Though Seve's "Proud to be an American" t-shirt drew a fine line between Garth and Joe Dirt. Luckily, Trent scrawled "Aerosmith" over it.

k TIME TO WRITE MORE bai.

Lord shake her bones and make her mine

Finally got around to posting this! About a month ago, Seve and I saw Joshua James. This shouldn't seem like such an amazing feat, but it really is. We've been trying to go to a Joshua James show together before we even started dating.

The first time, Seve and I had only just moved on from making eyes at each other in class to openly flirting and getting to know each other. I thought he was cute and invited him to attend the show with me. He said yes, but then ended up having to deal with an unpleasant ex-girlfriend situation. Another time, I was avoiding an ex-boyfriend who I was sure would be at the show, and declined Seve's invitation to avoid an awkward encounter. I regret not being brave and just going with that cute Seve fella. After that, Seve and I missed out on Mr. James several times by simply being out of state (Texas, Missouri, Russia ... yeah) but here we are, a couple years later, and we finally got to see this artist we love so much - he's one of "our" artists, so it was about time.

For you, Seve. I know I can be selfish sometimes, and grumpy and scared and silly and lame. Thanks for loving me anyway. I happen to love you just as much. I'm trying everyday to be the person for you that you are for me.

Did you see the words?

These are only a handful of the bajillion shots we had taken a few months ago by Tiana Godfrey. Thanks Liz & Jacob for turning us on to her!

I know this is long but read it anyway

Hey so yay Banned Book Week! How can I not put in my two cents with all the great blog posts out there?

My favorite banned book is A Clockwork Orange.
For those of you picturing the sleazy 70s film, you’re probably all WELL YEAH IT WAS BANNED but let’s hear some words from author Anthony Burgess:

"We all suffer from the popular desire to make the known notorious. The book I am best known for, or only known for, is a novel I am prepared to repudiate: written a quarter of a century ago, a jeu d'esprit knocked off for money in three weeks, it became known as the raw material for a film which seemed to glorify sex and violence. The film made it easy for readers of the book to misunderstand what it was about, and the misunderstanding will pursue me till I die. I should not have written the book because of this danger of misinterpretation.”

In a nutshell, A Clockwork Orange is about a violent teenager doing violent things who is captured by the government who make him an offer: go to jail for your crimes, or enter into our 2 week experimental program to "cure" the violence out of you. Alex (the name of our anti-hero) accepts the latter, and is then strapped to a chair, given severe nausea-inducing drugs, and is forced to watch extremely violent films with his eyes wired open so he won't miss a thing. The experiment works - whenever Alex considers an act of violence, his body falls into an aggressive bout of nausea and pain. As a little we-hate-you, the police also played Alex's favorite music - classical - while they were conducting the experiments, so now that makes him nausea-crazy too. Later when he’s in the top floor of a building some classical music starts playing; the nausea and pain is too much to bear so he flings himself out the window in an attempt to kill himself. He doesn't succeed, and the blow the fall gave to his head has reversed the experiment. He is free to do violence again.*

But does he? Yes, which really blows the whole message of the story IMO. You see, the 21st chapter of the book was omitted from the American release - the publisher thought a redeeming ending was too wishy washy. The backbone of the story is moral choice - how choices don't matter if they're forced upon you; you must choose good or bad for yourself. Back in 1960s America, we were all led to believe in what Burgess called a "badly flawed" ending, where Alex decides to descend back into his dark nature.

To remedy this, Burgess wrote a stage adaptation.**

K so you’re probably thinking JULES GET TO THE POINT OR SHUTZ UP so here we go: Seve has been approved to direct a play at BYU-Idaho in between Arsenic and Old Lace and Marriage of Figaro, and we're thinking it'd be cool to do A Clockwork Orange . . . with an all-female cast.

It's not the play he'll actually do, because of time (it has to be a one act), money (budget is tight), and pending approval (this is BYU-I, after all) but we're thinking it'd be a sweet project to pursue in the future. Thoughts?

* this plot was off the top of my head, so some things might not be exact, but the basic plot is accurate.
** the setting is a dystopian England and the novel was written in Nadsat, an English-Russian hybrid slang language invented by Burgess himself. Take that, Tolkien.
