No party after all
Sorry, guys. I'm super sick. No grunge party this weekend. Called in to work today. Now is the time to sleep, sleep, sleep.

Two Week Dream
I'm sick. I brought some soup to work for lunch today, but forgot the can opener. Boo. I remembered, though, at a Chinese resturaunt a block from where I work, an old man once had the most delicious looking soup . . . when I asked him what it was, he said "I don't know! I call it oatmeal and when I ask for oatmeal she brings me this stuff everyday!"
"She" is one of the super sweet owners, and oatmeal turns out to be Burmese Noodle Soup . . . which saved my lunch today. So delicious . . . and so big! The serving size is enough to feed me for three lunches. No really, I was only able to handle a third of it today before I was quite full. It had just the right amount spicy kick to clear my sinuses (if only for a moment) and just the right balance on liquid/noodles/veggies so as not to make me wanna vomit.
I'm also a little on the depressed side (if my tweets haven't already tipped you off) seeing as I go home to an empty apartment each night while Seve stage manages Children of Eden. I saw it last night and it was wonderful . . . but I just can't wait to have my Seve back. Nights without him feel like lonely dreams, even when I'm out and about with friends. Two more weeks.

We'll be daring
So many little disappointments. First, it's not Friday; second, my order for a kickin' new dress from UO (seen above) has been listed as cancelled in my order status . . . no explanation . . . and the charge lingers on my account. Time for a phone call. Third, with my mother-in-law in town I forgot all about my yoga class. Which I had invited her to attend with me, and she happily accepted. We both forgot. Fourth, didn't get to see my Russian volunteers last weekend (except for a fluke run-in with Courtney!) Fifth, I have to reschedule the grunge party (time has been changed on the invite). This one actually isn't a disappointment, as I wasn't doing much this week to prepare for it anyway, just been too busy. The extra week will give McKenzie and me time to make it spectacular . . . I swear we're the only ones who're excited about this thing. The majority of those I've brought it up to either don't get it or think grunge is too precious to satirize.
But, on the agenda so far:
- Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Veruca Salt, Hole & more
- Empire Records . . . or an episode of Pete & Pete . . . or Daria . . .
- Prize for best dressed
- Mix CDs as party favors
- 90s matte make-up tutorial (this is a thinly veiled Mary Kay party, after all . . . at least a portion of it is, anyway)
- Karaoke? Messing around on a guitar and amp with heavy distortion? Pretending to shoot up cocaine via pixie sticks? Or ring pop necklaces just because COME ON RING POPS? Still figuring it out.

Sun peeking out
I’m so happy it’s spring, even if it’s just dumpy-gray spring and the snow has yet to completely disappear. The roads were clear enough this weekend that we went longboarding, which I hadn’t done in over 6 months so I was nervous at first, but I picked it right back up. Back when I first got a bike, I remember feeling dorky with little confidence as I rode around town . . . then I picked up longboarding, and riding a bike was totally easy in comparison. Now that I’m trying to get confident at roller skating, longboarding feels like a piece of cake . . .
I ride a Landyachtz Spud (the tree design of which I HATE and can’t wait to sand down and redo myself). The Spud isn’t so much a drop deck as it is a ‘lowered’ deck. I love riding it because the lowered curves feel like they hug my feet and I’m in control, especially when sliding.
A little on longboard advertising: most companies opt for a city or ‘concrete wave’ route when advertising for their boards. Riders look like your typical skateboarder, do skateboard-y tricks, or "dancing," and hang out in typical city scapes like parking lots or skate parks. But I love Loaded Longboard’s advertising—it takes you into nature and allows you to feel free with your board. Riding down winding roads surrounded by trees with mountains in the distance. Even the boards themselves support a more pure feel, with tranquil graphics instead of cheesy graffiti, and they’re made of bamboo! Loaded’s #1 board is even called the “Dervish,” which my husband and some friends ride.
Main Entry: der•vish
Pronunciation: \ˈdər-vish\
Function: noun
Etymology: Turkish derviş, literally, beggar, from Persian darvīsh
Date: 1585
1 : a member of a Muslim religious order noted for devotional exercises (as bodily movements leading to a trance)
2 : one that whirls or dances with or as if with the abandonment of a dervish
On that note, I’m actually not very good at longboarding. I ran into a snow bank on Saturday and totally freaked out some little kids who were watching. I have yet to master speed wobbles and I’ve only conquered one slide. It’s a goal of mine this summer to nail down a Pendulum (“pendi,” “pengi,” whatever), and to successfully board down Targhee. It's fun to bundle up and go out for a morning ride, rather than a morning jog.

Little List and We Are Animals
Friday again! But a sad, gray one. Here’s a little list of five chill, gray Friday songs:
Has anyone seen Wrangler’s new ad campaign We Are Animals? From an advertising perspective, it’s a brilliant way to reposition the brand from old, pokey cowboys to hip youth. The ads come in a red series and a night/swamp series, and there’s like a bajillion of them, plus videos. Before you click on these links I should warn you some of the ads are pretty racy: red & night.
I can’t decide where I stand on it. When I first saw the campaign I was so impressed with the emotion and instinct behind it; the word “raw” comes to mind. And I liked the nitty gritty messy models. But then again, is that a bloody butt crack I see? Ew.

Grunge
I have a friend who’s a Mary Kay consultant and has asked me to host a party. I’m usually the first person to avoid these things, because I feel so awkward at them, like I have to buy something. But I really like my friend. And, I’ve been putting it off since before I left for Russia. So, you know, I owe her.
I asked her if it had to be facial party. I mean, Mary Kay sells make-up, right? Can’t we have a crazy make-up night? Like smoky eyes or mermaid blues or something? Or a theme, like, you know, 90’s grunge party?
Plaid flannel! Nirvana! Doc Martens! Pearl Jam! Seattle! OMG Courtney Love! Empire Records! Babydolls! Those bucket hats with flowers on ‘em! Guyz this could be awesome. 80’s parties are fun and all, with their glitter and leg warmers, but let’s get brooding and angsty. Make-up wise, I guess that’d just mean matte foundation with brown/berry lipstick, but, you know, I’m fine with that.
Let’s watch episodes of Daria!
Just some thoughts. Not sure if she’ll fly with this idea.
But here’s a Panache giveaway!

Starlite
Why yes, that is Van Halen on roller skates.
Seve took me to the roller rink this weekend so that I could live out my new dream of being a bona fide roller skater. Once we got there, I found myself totally nervous to skate and frankly, not very good at it. I was one of five people over the age of seven actually on skates; everyone else had roller blades and totally rocked on them, including my husband. I brought in my own personal skates, the wheels of which I had slaughtered by skating outdoors (they were meant for the rink only) and the owner wouldn't let me use them ("Crazy kids! Those wheels are ruined! Might as well rub sandpaper on my rink!) Luckily they had wheels there for me to buy and he gave me some that I can supposedly use outdoors and indoors . . . we'll see how that goes. He and his sweet little wife (wearing a lovely beret with a big ol' flower on it) put them on for me and I was ready to go. They were a sweet, funny old couple who've owned the Starlite Skating Rink for 34 years and told us their tales of speed skating and how $400 will get you a 'decent' pair of skates.

In other news, I'm officially an Isaacs! For any friends who haven't changed their name yet, I'd recommend MsNowMrs.com . . . good site for gathering all your paperwork together (for a fee). Though you could easily just get these docs yourself, this site saves time, especially with my 8-5 that only allows an hour for me to run errands.
